Do we still need graphic designers?

A Poster Wall for the 21st Century
On the occasion of the opening of the new Graphic Design Museum in Breda (NL) the posterwall for the 21st century was launched, both online and as an installation in the museum itself. In the museum 600 unique posters are automatically generated daily using content gathered from various internet sources. Online, one new poster is generated every five minutes. Constantly new and updated, the posters contain content covering a range of topics such as cultural events, news, weather, etc. In the museum it’s placed at the end of the overview exhibition ‘100 Years of Graphic Design in the Netherlands’. It attempts to provide insight into the direction graphic design might go in the future while posing the question: ‘Do we still need graphic designers?’

WearOut

This project is about wearables that take shape
once the wearer have used them.
What if the wearer could become whoever he is without having to choose
a certain representation in his outfit?
Is it possible to approach fashion design without
imposing a certain model to follow?
The outcome from these premises is a movement promoting diversity and diversity achieved through movement.
Since movement is as individual as our fingerprints, a design that takes into account motion becomes singular to each person. The design effortlessly adapts to the body’s movement. The mechanism applied on the fabric breaks when there is pressure and adjusts to the wearer. By using movement as a catalyzer of change in the object, the garment takes its final form once each person has used it.
By encouraging individual diversity, I hope to promote tolerance towards difference.

Voice knitting machine

1Enough - Fashion: we can enjoy less

A vase grown from mould

Mould – meaning both a cast and a fungus – is a research into how a product can be brought to life. Thomas Pleeging mixed some mycelium (the underground part) from edible shelf fungi and oyster mushrooms with cotton fibre, and put them inside a mould. After a few weeks they had formed a sturdy web that would keep its shape. The design, a vase in this case, could be harvested. ‘A bunch of flowers will bring life into your home, but in this case, the vase, too, will be a living thing.’ - By Thomas Pleeging

The ‘Decay’ project explores how traces of time and use can be embedded in textile. By wearing a carbon fibre suit over a white blouse, textile designer Marie Ilse Bourlanges captured the gestures of the body bending, stretching, scratching and rubbing. The transfer imprint on the blouse was then translated into a pattern of lines that ebb and flower across the textile.
